Community catering
Finland is a model country for public food services. Public food services have played a major role in maintaining public health of Finnish people.
Finns want to make sure every working person, student and daycare child has the opportunity to enjoy a healthy meal during the day. The daily lunch is the only hot meal of the day for a large number of working Finns.
The food service system is partly funded by public funds. Every child in the daycare centres and schools is offered a free meal every day, including a full main course as well as vegetables, bread and a drink. Although often low-budgeted, the meal is planned to be versatile and healthy.
Meal at work place or home-delivered for the elderly
The food service is divided into different levels according to the needs of service. The institutional catering takes care of people who eat their meals in the same place. The meals from the catering organisation are delivered to private homes as daily meals or as frozen food to be warmed up by the customer when the need for the delivery is not on a daily basis.
There is a long tradition of food service in senior homes. There are many situations where the need for a food service is demanded to secure normal life and a healthy diet.
