Vegetables and fruits

Special Benefits

Vegetables and fruit produced in Finland are of good quality, and the majority of them conform to EU standards.

There is little pesticide residue in Finnish vegetables and fruits. A Finnish apple can be eaten unpeeled, as no coating substances or waxes are used to reduce perishability.

There is a high standard of horticultural research in Finland. Horticultural research is directed towards growth and storage techniques of horticultural crops, the environmental effects of production, the production techniques of plant propagation material, integrated and biological plant protection, breeding of new cultivars of berries and apples, and nutritional status and the growth and quality of edible crops, just to name a few research themes.

Production and products

Finnish vegetables are available all year round. The main products, cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce, are cultivated in greenhouses, and potatoes and storable vegetables are available throughout all seasons. The most important vegetables are also available organically. Cultivation of fruit is rather limited.
