Production
In Finland professional fishing is carried at sea, and in the country’s numerous rivers and lakes. The most significant fish species from the open sea are Baltic Herring and Sprat. Pike perch, perch and white fish are caught in the coastal areas. Vendace is the most important fish from inland waters. Other volume species of inland water fishing are perch, whitefish and pike. Smelt and roach are also caught in significant numbers.
In Finland, rainbow trout are farmed for consumption. Other farmed fish species are whitefish, Arctic char and sturgeon. The major part of the fish farming is within seawaters. Research and new production techniques, and more effective and environment-friendly feeding methods are behind the more versatile aquaculture programme.
