EFSA approves health claim for 100% xylitol chewing gum

Logo LeafThe European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has supported a health claim application submitted by Leaf Suomi Oy, stating that Jenkki Professional chewing gum sweetened with 100% xylitol reduces the risk of tooth decay in children when 2–3 grams of the gum is chewed at least three times a day after meals.

Decades of research proves positive

 

Jenkki Pro Junior 80g Tuttifrutti 626x960Leaf presented in its application the results of 31 studies made over a time span of more than three decades and EFSA considered those on Jenkki Professional chewing gum sweetened with 100% xylitol especially convincing in terms of making a product-specific health claim.

 

“EFSA sets strict criteria. The proof needs to be solid which also helps makes consumer communication clearer,” states Leaf’s Communications Manager Marja Piironen. “And we are proud that the health claim was approved.”

 

EFSA setting the standards

 

Jenkki Professional chewing gumThe European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) acts as an advisory body for the European Commission which following EFSA’s scientific judgement on a food safety issue has two months to ratify an appropriate decision.

 

The health claim “100% xylitol chewing gum reduces the risk of tooth decay in children” is a claim related to disease risk reduction based on the Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on nutrition and health claims made on foods.
