Decades of research proves positive
Leaf presented
in its application the results of 31 studies made over a time span of more than
three decades and EFSA considered those on Jenkki Professional chewing gum sweetened
with 100% xylitol especially convincing in terms of making a product-specific
health claim.
“EFSA sets strict criteria. The proof needs to be solid which also helps makes consumer communication clearer,” states Leaf’s Communications Manager Marja Piironen. “And we are proud that the health claim was approved.”
EFSA setting the standards
The
European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) acts as an advisory body for the European
Commission which following EFSA’s scientific judgement on a food safety issue has
two months to ratify an appropriate decision.
The health
claim “100% xylitol chewing gum reduces the risk of tooth decay in children” is
a claim related to disease risk reduction based on the Regulation of the
European Parliament and of the Council on nutrition and health claims made on
foods.
